Freedom Farms
In terms of access to nutritious food, Minneapolis is one of the worst food deserts in the country. Our plan is to flood the desert!
Mix it up!
Todd Western IV is tapping into the generations of farmers before him and reframing how his family thinks about farming in the future. While traditional row crops have been the lifeblood for so many farmers, the industry’s mono culture practices are illuminating detrimental impacts on climate as well as an inefficiency in land usage.
Todd’s goal is to diversify his family’s practices to provide his children a means to flood communities like his beloved Minneapolis with nutrient-rich produce. This has led to him discovering a passion for growing microgreens.
Freedom Farms reminds us that we have these freedoms:
Health.
By offering nutrient-dense food, we give communities the power to make more healthier choices.
Economic.
Farmers of color have long been shut-out of opportunities within the agricultural industry, despite being the most crucial part of the labor force. We want to show BIPOC farmers how to reclaim the ability to make a living from it.
Growth.
Nobody is stuck in any box! We believe everyone has the freedom to learn new skills, perspectives and create life experiences. We want to help inspire and train the next generation of emerging farmers of color.
Healing.
Emotional and mental traumas are at an all-time high these days. We advocate for everyone to free themselves of the stigmas that come with prioritizing your physical and mental health equally.
